Tangut Component-315

315/768

𘤺 is Tangut component 315, a structural piece in the script used for the medieval Tangut language of the Western Xia kingdom. Scholars use components to index and describe full characters; “315” is a catalog label, not a reading. The script was commissioned for a Tangut collection of Buddhist scriptures and a distinct state identity.

What 𘤺 means

It is a structural part, not a complete word. 𘤺 is a Tangut component scholars use to index or describe larger characters. “315” is a list label, not a pronunciation or dictionary gloss.

Many Tangut components are shortened forms of fuller characters, and dictionaries do not share one fixed component list. A 2008 Unicode proposal called this glyph “Tangut Radical R0315”; a radical is a part used to file characters in a dictionary. The encoded component set also includes other structural pieces.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served a new state’s writing needs. In 1036, Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the creation of a writing system for his kingdom. It supported a Tangut collection of Buddhist scriptures and helped establish an identity distinct from Song China.

Tangut writing was its own system, though Chinese writing inspired its visual forms and the way its characters were built. Tangut rulers also followed their Khitan neighbors, another people of the region whose rulers had created two scripts about a century earlier; one drew heavily on Chinese writing.

Manuscripts recovered from Khara-khoto, a ruined city in Inner Mongolia, preserve Buddhist texts and Chinese works translated into Tangut, including writings on government, war, and literature. The script therefore served a distinct state identity and carried a wide range of texts.

What does it mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a reference to Tangut character structure. Alone, 𘤺 does not identify a full word to translate; ask for the complete Tangut character or the context in which it appears.

Technical and scholarly: by itself, it points to Tangut indexing or character analysis.

“315” is a catalog label, not a Tangut reading.

Questions people ask

2

Does 315 tell me how to pronounce this?

No. “315” is the list label, not a sound value. Tangut components are used to analyze full characters; this number does not tell you how to say one.

Why does 𘤺 appear as a box?

Display is font-dependent: without Tangut coverage, a font may show a box or blank. A font with Tangut support can show the glyph.
