Tangut Component 375

375/768

𘥶 is a Tangut writing component, not a word with its own translation. Scholars use Tangut components to index and describe complete characters; “375” is its catalog label. A Tangut-capable font is needed to display it.

What 𘥶 means

It helps describe how Tangut characters are built. Components and stroke information help scholars find characters in dictionaries. Ideographic Description Sequences are short formulas showing how a character is assembled. Read 𘥶 as structure, not a pronunciation.

Tangut writing took shape around 1036 for the Western Xia state, serving its government and distinct political identity. The period also saw a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures translated into Tangut. The script drew on Chinese writing principles and neighboring Khitan, while remaining distinct. Tangut texts continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties.

A lone 𘥶 is best read as a Tangut script sample or a scholarly reference.

1

Why does 𘥶 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
