tangut component-410

Tangut Component 410

𘦙 is a Tangut component used to index and describe larger characters; its label does not give it a spoken word or translation. Researchers use components to study Xixia writing, and a font without Tangut support may show this glyph as an empty box.

What 𘦙 means

It is a structural piece, not a word with one translation.

Tangut components are pieces scholars use to index, describe, and analyze full characters. A piece's role can vary across characters and dictionary systems, so 𘦙 alone does not give one stable word or pronunciation. Unicode also uses these pieces to describe Tangut characters; that makes 𘦙 a tool for analysis, not proof that it was read as a word by itself.

The number is an index in a modern component repertoire, not a translation or a record of historical pronunciation.

Where did the Tangut script come from?

The Tangut script was created for the Western Xia state.

Created under Li Yuanhao in 1036, it supported the state's institutions and a written tradition distinct from Song China. Tangut writing served official and literary life, including a Tangut Buddhist canon.

An undated manuscript from the ruined city of Khara-Khoto, now held by the British Library, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Surviving texts include Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese Confucian, military, encyclopedic, and literary works. Tangut writing drew on Chinese principles, while neighboring Khitan state-script projects offer a historical parallel; these influences do not mean Tangut descended directly from Chinese or Khitan writing.

Technical and scholarly; it belongs in Tangut-script study and Unicode description, not ordinary chat.

If it appears as a box, check font support before assuming the text is damaged.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘦙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
