Tangut Component-687

687/768

𘪮 is a Tangut component: a structural part used to index and describe larger Tangut characters, not a complete word by itself. Tangut writing served the Tangut state and later carried Buddhist translations and printed books. If it appears as a box, the selected font may lack the glyph.

What 𘪮 means

It is a structural part, not a complete Tangut word. Unicode describes Tangut components as pieces used to index, describe, and analyze larger Tangut characters. The larger character supplies the reading; alone, 𘪮 is best treated as a scholarly component reference.

The script emerged around 1036 as a state writing system for the Tangut language. It served official documents and diplomacy, and carried Buddhist translations; by the mid-twelfth century, Tangut texts were printed from woodblocks. This is the history of the script, not a personal meaning for this component.

Tangut writing took structural inspiration from Chinese writing, but the scripts are not interchangeable or mutually legible. Modern dictionaries also divide Tangut characters into components differently: Unicode brings together several scholarly traditions rather than setting one universal component list. So 𘪮 is a tool for analyzing Tangut writing, not a Chinese radical with an automatic Chinese reading.

Why does 𘪮 look different?

Font support changes its appearance, not its identity. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut supports Tangut Components, but another Tangut font may draw different stroke proportions. Without a Tangut-capable font, an app can show a missing-glyph box.

An app can keep 𘪮 in the text while failing to draw it. Check the selected font before treating the box as another Tangut character.

Specialist and archival: it fits Tangut scholarship, font work, and text encoding.

Alone, it does not reliably communicate a word; include the surrounding Tangut character or an explanation.

1

Why does 𘪮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
