What 𗀿 means

It has a reconstructed reading, but no settled English gloss.

Li Fanwen's index gives the scholarly romanized reading lji, tone IX; other scholars reconstruct it differently. This spelling records a proposed sound, not a translation. The character appears in two 12th-century Tangut dictionaries whose titles mean “Sea of Writing” and “Homophones.”

Created around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing served state-building, a distinct Tangut identity, and Buddhist texts. Its forms drew visual and structural inspiration from Chinese writing without deriving from Chinese characters. The neighboring Khitan state had created two state scripts about a century earlier. A surviving manuscript probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut texts included Buddhist, Confucian, military, encyclopedic, and literary works; use continued through the Yuan and Ming, ending by the end of Ming rule.

How can I type and display 𗀿?

Find it with Tangut lookup; check font coverage.

Specialist Tangut tools can search by dictionary number, components, keywords, or structural codes. The scholarly spelling lji is not necessarily an input spelling.

Unicode 16.0's Tangut chart unifies source variants only when the sources do not treat them as distinct; font files can still give one encoded character different outlines. As of 2026, a box or replacement mark usually means the active app's font lacks Tangut coverage, not that 𗀿 is invalid.
