What 𗁏 means
In Tangut, it names biting.
The Tangut (Xixia) script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor about 1036 to write Tangut, spoken in what is now northwestern China. Its signs resemble Chinese characters but belong to a separate, unrelated script.
After the Mongols conquered Western Xia, Tangut remained in official, Buddhist, legal, and literary texts under Yuan and Ming rule, then fell out of use by Ming’s end. A 12th-century Chinese–Tangut word list helped scholars recover readings. Rediscovered in the late 19th century, the script was largely deciphered in the early 20th century.
Historical writing, studied by scholars today.
