What 𗁘 means

Its Tangut glosses include “expand,” “distend,” “swell,” and “wide.”

Tangut dictionary references list 𗁘 as a variant of 𗁒, which is glossed “wide.”

A Tangut character normally represents one syllable, so neighboring characters and the sentence help show which sense fits.

What does 𗁘 mean when someone sends it?

The glyph gives you a character, not a sentence-level translation.

A one-character message may show a Tangut text sample or check whether the text displays. Ask what it refers to before choosing a dictionary gloss.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It gave Western Xia a state script for records and translation.

Western Xia was a Tangut kingdom. Its court used Tangut writing for official records, education, Buddhist texts, and translations, while Chinese writing remained in use. The script's square form drew on Chinese-character traditions; a possible influence from the region's earlier Khitan script is less certain.

Accounts place its creation under Li Yuanhao's rule (1038–1048) but differ on credit: one says his attendant Yuqi drafted the early graphs, Li added to them, and Yeli Renrong edited and promoted the script; another gives Li the main credit and says he assigned Yeli to put it into use. An official message sent to a military inspector in Guazhou, dated 1072, is the earliest surviving example. Tangut writing persisted after Western Xia fell; an inscription erected in 1502 is later evidence.

Its tone is neutral and lexical; the sentence around it supplies the context.

Don't choose “wide” on its own; it is one dictionary gloss.

Questions people ask

2

Can 𗁘 be used as a Chinese character?

No. 𗁘 belongs to Tangut writing. The square forms of Tangut and Chinese writing reflect a historical connection, but this glyph is not a Chinese character.

Why does 𗁘 show as a box?

A box usually means the font used for that text lacks a Tangut glyph. A font with Tangut coverage should display it; font designs can draw the same character differently.
