What 𗂍 means
As of 2026, no settled English gloss is established.
The character belongs to the Tangut script used by Xixia (Western Xia). Its reconstructed reading is associated with two Tangut lexicons from the 12th century: Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”).
Why was the Tangut script created?
The state developed it for administration and Buddhist texts.
The Tangut script was disseminated in 1036 for official correspondence and a translation of the Buddhist canon. Accounts differ on whether Li Yuanhao, Yeli Renrong, or another court figure should be called its creator; it was commissioned and developed under imperial authority.
Official documents from 1072 are among the earliest surviving examples. Tangut writing also appears in lexicons, Chinese classics, laws, military works, and literature. The latest known inscription is dated 1502.
How do I type 𗂍?
A Tangut phonetic input method can produce it.
The community Rime Xunpin schema maps reconstructed Tangut readings to characters. It is a specialist IME, not a standard keyboard layout.
As of 2026, browser-based Tangut renderers can provide a web font, while desktop apps may still need an installed Tangut font such as Noto Serif Tangut.
Use it in Tangut texts, historical research, or exact-character reference.
