What does 𗂐 mean?
It means “pierce” or “impale,” and can also mean “invade and harass.”
A Tangut Buddhist translation uses 𗂐𗉛 for “sorrow as if being pierced”: 𗂐 contributes the piercing sense.
Is 𗂐 Chinese?
No. It is Tangut, a distinct script influenced by Chinese writing.
Created for Western Xia state-building in 1036, Tangut gave its Tibeto-Burman language a written form. The script served government and Buddhist translations, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan.
Tangut rulers followed the earlier Khitan example of a state-backed script. Writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; surviving manuscripts include one probably from the 12th or early 13th century.
Historical and scholarly; understand it in its Tangut textual context.
