Tangut character 𗂕

150/6136

𗂕 is a character in the Tangut script; you need a Tangut dictionary or its original sentence to tell what word and reading it carries. Tangut writing served the Western Xia (Xixia) state, including Buddhist translations. A font with Tangut coverage is needed to display it.

What 𗂕 means

The glyph alone does not give its exact word or sound. Find 𗂕 in a Tangut dictionary or read it in its sentence; a code-point label identifies the character but does not translate it.

What was Tangut writing used for?

Tangut writing served the Western Xia state. The court used it for official and cultural work, including translations of Chinese and Buddhist texts.

A 12th-century Tangut phonological work—a reference that records character sounds—is a key guide to the script; its earliest printing is dated 1125. Tangut verse also survives in manuscript exercises where students repeatedly copied characters to practice the writing system.

Why does 𗂕 show as a box?

A blank box usually means your font lacks Tangut coverage. In pre-Unicode fonts—made before Tangut had its own Unicode range—some characters were mapped onto code points assigned to Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text. Those mappings differed between fonts, so the same text could display as another glyph.
