Tangut character 17158

345/6136

𗅘 is a Tangut character; its historical record preserves competing readings rather than a settled English gloss. Its practical settings include Tangut study, archival quotation, and specialist typesetting. If it appears as a box, the font may lack Tangut coverage even when the text is intact.

What 𗅘 means

Read it in context within Tangut writing.

The 12th-century dictionaries Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”) list three reconstructed readings: khã¹, jiq₃, and khan¹. These are scholarly attempts to recover pronunciation, not translations; the different reconstructions do not settle one English gloss.

Emperor Li Yuanhao introduced Tangut writing in 1036 as part of building the state. The language became an official state language, and a major purpose seems to have been compiling a Buddhist canon. Surviving books include translations of Buddhist works from Chinese and Tibetan, plus Chinese classics. After the Mongol conquest, Tangut faded from everyday life but remained in classical texts for centuries. Tangut writing drew on Chinese conventions and developed alongside Khitan and Jurchen writing; those historical links do not make this a Chinese character.

How do I type 𗅘?

Use a Tangut-specific input method, such as RIME with Tangut Cangjie.

RIME is a configurable input-method platform. Other Tangut schemes select characters by their components, dictionary numbers, or a four-corner code based on shape.

Input and display are separate: a box may mean the active font lacks Tangut coverage. Fonts such as Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan can display the script; their designs may differ without changing the character.

Specialist and archival: this character signals Tangut study, historical quotation, or specialist typography.

It belongs to the Tangut script; do not read its shape as a Chinese translation.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𗅘 Chinese?

No. 𗅘 belongs to the Tangut script, created for writing the Tangut language. The script drew on Chinese writing conventions, but this character is not Chinese.

Why does 𗅘 show as a box?

It can. The active font may lack Tangut coverage, so an app shows a missing-glyph box. The text can still be intact; a Tangut-capable font such as Noto Serif Tangut can display it.
