What 𗇚 means
Its individual meaning remains uncertain.
A 12th-century Tangut pronunciation book, Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), preserves a reading reconstructed from historical sound notes but gives no English gloss.
Why was Tangut script created?
To give Western Xia its own writing system.
Created around 1036 amid contact and conflict with China, Tangut uses square shapes built from components. It is a distinct script, though its forms resemble Chinese characters. The script also has historical ties to neighboring Khitan and Jurchen writing; neither tie identifies a one-to-one counterpart for 𗇚. Most surviving material from the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries is Buddhist, preserving evidence about religion and printing.

1Why does 𗇚 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
