To enter 𗉌, use Unicode code-point input and a font that supports Tangut. This Tangut character comes from the Xixia writing system; its Chinese dictionary gloss is 生, with senses such as life, birth, or being born. Without Tangut font coverage, it may appear blank or as a missing-glyph box.

What 𗉌 means

Use Unicode code-point input and a Tangut-capable font.

In an editor with Unicode input, enter U1724C; the keystrokes depend on your operating system. Most everyday keyboard layouts have no direct key for this rare character.

A font needs Tangut coverage to display it. Without that support, it may appear blank or as a missing-glyph box; the character itself is unchanged.

What does 𗉌 mean—and is it Tangut or Chinese?

It is Tangut; 生 is its Chinese dictionary gloss.

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary maps 𗉌 to entry L2008-1168 and lists 生 as a gloss. Here, 生 points to meanings such as life, birth, or being born; it is a translation aid, not the same character or a Chinese alternate form of 𗉌.

Read the surrounding Tangut text to choose among the glosses; translating it as only “life” can narrow the meaning too much.

Tangut script origin: why was it created?

It was a state-backed script for Tangut language and identity.

Historical accounts place its creation around 1036 under Li Yuanhao, who sponsored it. The script wrote the Tangut language and supported Buddhist translation, while giving Western Xia a written culture distinct from Song China. A surviving manuscript example probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century, showing use beyond court decrees.

The script remained in use after the dynasty fell; its latest known examples date to the late 15th or early 16th century. These dates describe Tangut script, not the first appearance of this individual character.

Specialist and historical; read 生 as the Chinese gloss, not as the script identity.

生 is a translation clue, not a substitute for 𗉌.

1

Why does 𗉌 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
