Tangut Ideogram 1725B

𗉛 is a Tangut character with reconstructed readings and recorded compounds; a pronunciation does not tell you its English meaning. Read it in its Tangut word or with a scholarly gloss rather than guessing from the glyph alone.

What 𗉛 means

As of January 2025, its individual entry has no standard English gloss.

That dictionary entry lists reconstructed readings (scholars’ proposed pronunciations) and compounds. A reading tells you how scholars think the character sounded; it is not a translation. The entry cites the 12th-century Wénhǎi and Tóngyīn, Tangut dictionaries that document the character in medieval writing.

Is 𗉛 Chinese?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a distinct writing system.

Tangut script was created around 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Western Xia state in what is now northwestern China. It served official writing and translations of the Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut characters drew on some Chinese character-building principles and developed in the same region as Khitan scripts, but Tangut is a separate script.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued in Yuan- and Ming-era records before becoming obsolete. As of 2026, Tangut appears mainly in historical study and technical work; a lone 𗉛 in a message is better treated as a reference or font test than as a ready-made reaction.

Historical and specialist; a lone glyph has no established casual-chat tone.

Its square look does not make it Chinese; 𗉛 belongs to Tangut writing.

2

Can I translate 𗉛 from its shape?

No. Tangut characters use some Chinese-influenced construction principles, but their parts are not an English gloss. Read the surrounding Tangut word or an accompanying scholarly translation.

Why does 𗉛 show as a box?

That can happen when the app or device lacks a Tangut-capable font. It may show a box or fallback glyph; the displayed mark changes, but the character remains 𗉛.
