tangut ideograph-1729a

Tangut character 1729A

667/6136

𗊚 is a Tangut word-sign, but its English meaning is unsettled. An English index files one dictionary entry under “otter,” but that is only a candidate gloss. Sent alone, it leaves the recipient without enough context to know which Tangut word the sender intends.

What 𗊚 means

It is a Tangut word-sign with no settled English gloss.

Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists it as entry 2410 and gives the reconstructed reading *nji. A reconstructed reading is a scholarly estimate of how the historical language sounded, not a modern spoken pronunciation. An English index places entries 2410 and 5816 under “otter,” so that word is a candidate, not a secure translation. As of 2026, the character-level record still leaves its English meaning unresolved.

A 12th-century attestation places 𗊚 in Tóngyīn, a Tangut dictionary of homophones—words with the same pronunciation. The entry also records the compound 𗊚𘘤, showing that this character belonged to historical Tangut vocabulary.

Why was Tangut writing created?

The Western Xia state commissioned it for public life.

Around 1036, the ruler of Western Xia ordered scholars to create a writing system for Tangut. It marked Tangut identity alongside Chinese culture and served government, religious books, private texts, and inscriptions.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols in 1227, Tangut writing remained in Yuan- and Ming-period sources, including Buddhist texts, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. That history shows continuity of a written language, not a known modern reinterpretation of 𗊚.

Someone sent me 𗊚—what are they saying?

Treat it as a historical-script reference, not a built-in reaction.

If someone sends it alone, ask which word or source they mean. The glyph’s shape alone cannot tell a general reader what word the sender intends.

Tangut characters were made for the Tangut language; their resemblance to Chinese ideographs does not make them Chinese words. If you share 𗊚, label it as Tangut and add a gloss when you know the intended word.

Historical and specialist; in a chat, it reads as a deliberate Tangut reference, not everyday shorthand.

Do not guess its meaning from its Chinese-like shape or from “otter” alone.

Can I use 𗊚 as an emoji?

No. As of 2026, Unicode assigns 𗊚 no emoji presentation, so it has no built-in reaction meaning.

Why does 𗊚 appear as a box?

A blank box usually means the font being used cannot draw the character. Unicode 16.0.0 documents source-glyph variants in Tangut texts, so the visible shape can also vary while the encoded character stays 𗊚.

Does 𗊚 definitely mean “otter”?

Not definitively. An English index places dictionary entry 2410 under “otter” alongside 5816, but the character-level record does not settle that translation.
