Why was the Tangut script made?
It was made for Western Xia’s state and cultural life. In 1036, an imperial order established Tangut writing for official and cultural use, including a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. Manuscripts also preserve Tangut translations of Chinese classics, military works, encyclopedias and literature.
Chinese writing influenced the script’s design, but Tangut writing was created for the Tangut language.
