Tangut Character 172AE

687/6136

𗊮 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is “to flow.” You will meet it in Tangut text or historical-script discussion; alone in a chat, it gives little clue whether the sender means that gloss or simply the script. Tangut writing served Buddhist translation as well as the Western Xia state.

What 𗊮 means

Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “to flow.”

Chinese 溶 appears as a glossing aid for this dictionary entry; it is not a form of 𗊮 and cannot replace it in Tangut text.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It served Buddhist translation and Western Xia state identity.

Tangut writing was created around 1036–1037 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao. It was used to translate Buddhist scripture and gave the state a written identity distinct from Song China.

Tangut texts also include law codes, Confucian works, military material, and literature. A manuscript from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century; the script remained in use into the 16th century. Tangut writing drew on Chinese principles, while Khitan scripts offered a nearby precedent for a state-backed writing system.

What does 𗊮 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a Tangut reference; ask what the sender means.

On its own, the character does not tell you whether the sender means “to flow,” is quoting Tangut text, or chose it for its script. Ask for context; if you mean the verb in ordinary conversation, write the words around it.

Specialist and archival in feel; without Tangut context, the dictionary gloss is hard to recover from the glyph alone.

Explain it before sending it to someone who may not read Tangut.
