What 𗌜 means
It means “water” in Tangut.
Tangut, also called Xixia, was the language of the Western Xia state. Scholars reconstruct this word’s reading as *njo̱r¹; the asterisk marks a reconstructed form, and the spelling is specialist notation rather than an everyday pronunciation guide.
Tangut writing was commissioned for official use and translations of Buddhist and Chinese classics. Two Tangut reference works from the 12th century, Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), record the word. This is a lexical gloss, not evidence that the character is a drawing of water.
Someone sent me 𗌜—what should I read?
Read it as Tangut writing; ask for context before inferring intent.
Its historical gloss does not tell you whether today’s sender means water, is discussing Tangut, or chose the character for another reason.
A reader familiar with Chinese characters may recognize the square style. Tangut writing was shaped in a Chinese-inspired tradition but represents another language; its appearance alone supplies no Chinese reading.
This is a historical Tangut word; its use in a modern message needs context.
“Water” is the dictionary gloss, not a reliable reading of the sender’s intent.
