What 𗍯 means
It is one character in a script for the Tangut language.
𗍯’s codepoint label identifies the encoded sign but does not give a Tangut meaning. Read it within a Tangut word or sentence and consult a Tangut dictionary to identify its value.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave Tangut a written form for state and cultural life.
Accounts date its creation to 1036, under an order from Li Yuanhao, ruler of the Western Xia state. The project served Tangut state-building and gave the language a written medium distinct from the Chinese writing used by the Song.
Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scriptures, translations of Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military treatises and literature. The neighboring Khitan people had developed two scripts about a century earlier, one largely based on Chinese writing. That is a regional precedent, not a shared character set. Inscriptions show Tangut writing remained in use for a time after Western Xia fell, before knowledge declined.
Is 𗍯 Chinese writing?
No: it belongs to the Tangut script and language.
Unicode describes Tangut character shapes as visually close to Chinese ideographs. The resemblance is real, but Tangut is a separate writing system for the Tangut language; the characters do not carry Chinese readings or meanings just because they look familiar.
Historical and specialist; outside a Tangut passage, a translation or source helps make the character interpretable.
