Tangut Character 1737D

𗍽 is a Tangut verb for saluting. It belongs to a distinct script created for the Tangut language under the Western Xia kingdom; historical dictionaries preserve the word. It names an action, not a ready-made “hello.”

Text symbol

What 𗍽 means

It names an action, rather than a greeting formula. Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary glosses 𗍽 as “to salute”: it describes the act of saluting, not a ready-made greeting.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first emperor of the Tangut-led Western Xia kingdom to write the Tangut language. It is a distinct script shaped by a Chinese-influenced ideographic tradition.

Two 12th-century dictionaries, Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), list 𗍽. Tangut was used officially, and Buddhist and Chinese works were translated into it. The script remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell.

How do I type 𗍽?

Use Unicode hex input or a Tangut input method editor (IME). Enter U1737D through your system’s Unicode input. A Tangut IME offers character candidates; some tools need a dictionary loaded before candidates appear.

Unicode’s Tangut chart indexes 𗍽 under radical 𘠮, a component used to group characters in a reference chart. If 𗍽 appears as a box, the selected font lacks Tangut coverage; a Tangut-capable font can display it.

Historical and specialist; use it in Tangut text, script study, or a clearly labeled historical quotation.

Outside Tangut context, readers may not recognize it as a salute; don’t use it as a generic greeting.

Questions people ask

3

Why does 𗍽 show as a box?

Your text system has not found a Tangut font for the character, so it displays a missing-glyph placeholder. A Tangut-capable font can render it.

Can I read 𗍽 as a Chinese character?

No. 𗍽 belongs to the distinct Tangut script. That script was influenced by Chinese ideographic writing, but this character is not interchangeable with a Chinese character.

Did Tangut writing stop when Western Xia fell?

No. The script continued under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell, but became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
