What 𗎟 means
It means “clan” or “kin group.”
Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary pairs it with Chinese 族, which can mean clan, tribe, or ethnic group. That Chinese glyph is a translation clue, not the identity of 𗎟.
Is 𗎟 a Chinese character?
No. It is Tangut writing.
The script was promulgated in 1036 for Western Xia, a kingdom ruled by the Tangut people. Ruler Li Yuanhao asked adviser Yeli Renrong to design handwriting models. Chinese regular script shaped the system, but its characters write Tangut.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut remained in Buddhist use. Two stone pillars bearing Buddhist prayers date to 1502; a 2025 study identifies them as the latest datable Tangut materials known at the time.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗎟 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
