Tangut character 𗎪

939/6136

The Tangut character 𗎪 has no securely established standalone meaning or reading, so the surrounding word is needed to decode it. Tangut writing served the Western Xia state in official records, Buddhist translation, law, and literature. In digital text, the character can remain present even when a font cannot draw it.

What 𗎪 means

Its standalone meaning and reading are not securely established. Catalog records identify the graph through Tangut components rather than an English gloss. Read it with the surrounding Tangut word and a specialist dictionary; the isolated character does not settle its translation or pronunciation.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave Western Xia a script for state records and translation. Historical accounts place its promulgation in the 1030s, linking Li Yuanhao with officials including Yeli Renrong. The project supported state-building: documents, teaching, and translations could use a script distinct from the Sinitic writing used by neighboring Song China. Buddhist translation was a major goal alongside official work.

Accounts give different dates for the earliest surviving documents: one study places the earliest securely dated example at 1069 or 1070, while another identifies a 1072 official document from Guazhou. A 1502 inscription shows that Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia state fell.

Is 𗎪 a Chinese character?

No. Tangut is a distinct script shaped in part by Chinese models. Tangut and Chinese were treated as separate writing systems despite their shared influence. Some scholars have proposed a Khitan connection; Tangut is also compared with Khitan and Jurchen in the wider landscape of scripts modeled on Chinese characters, but direct ancestry and borrowing remain debated. Those comparisons do not make the scripts interchangeable.

Historical and specialist; 𗎪 is not a standard chat symbol.

Without shared Tangut context, a recipient cannot infer its reading.
