What 𗏿 means
It means “brother,” with “maternal uncle” as another gloss.
Why does Tangut writing resemble Chinese?
Tangut is a separate script influenced by Chinese writing.
Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as part of state-building; aims included Buddhist sacred texts in Tangut and a political identity distinct from the Chinese Song dynasty. Neighboring Khitan rulers had their own state scripts. Tangut writing drew on Chinese visual and structural principles but remained separate, and carried Buddhist works and Chinese translations. After Western Xia fell in 1227, writing continued during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty, and was rediscovered in the late 19th century.
