Tangut Character 𗐦

1063/6136

𗐦 is a Tangut character for a noun glossed “something to prepare” or “gift.” It belongs to the old writing system for Tangut, the language of Western Xia, a medieval state in what is now northwestern China; that “gift” gloss alone does not make it a clear present symbol today.

What 𗐦 means

**It means “something to prepare” or “a gift.”

In Tangut, the language of the medieval Western Xia state in what is now northwestern China, 𗐦 occurs as a noun. Dictionaries gloss it as “something to prepare” or “gift”; those are word translations, not a clear standalone signal that someone is giving a present.

An old Tangut–Chinese glossary pairs 𗡸𗐦 with a Chinese term translated as “dowry.” A 2024 study argues the match may be approximate: that Chinese term could also mean household supplies, and 𗐦 may refer to prepared things or gifts without being limited to women.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It was created for a medieval state, its language, and Buddhist texts.

Tangut writing began around 1036 under Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao. It served state records and expressed a distinct Tangut identity; one aim was a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures.

The square Tangut characters were shaped partly by Chinese-script models, but formed a separate system for another language. The earliest surviving Tangut document in the historical record is an official dispatch to a military officer in Guazhou, a Western Xia district, dated 1072. The script continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; an inscription from 1502 is among its latest known uses.

Should I send 𗐦 as a gift?

Only if the recipient knows Tangut or gets an explanation.

Alone, 𗐦 does not clearly say “gift.” Use it when Tangut or Western Xia is the point, and explain the word if you mean an actual present.

A font or app without Tangut coverage may show a box instead of the character. That is a missing-glyph display, not a different reading.

Historical and specialist; it suits Tangut reading, Western Xia history, or a clearly labeled language example.

A lone 𗐦 does not clearly say “gift.”

The “gift” gloss needs explanation; alone, the character has no clear everyday message.

Why does 𗐦 show as a box?

Font-dependent. An app or typeface without Tangut coverage can show a missing-glyph box; the box is not another reading. Use a Tangut-capable font.
