Tangut character for south

1080/6136

In the Tangut language, 𗐷 means “south.” It is a historical text character, not an emoji; its shape comes from a font rather than platform emoji artwork. Tangut was the language of Western Xia, a state in what is now northwestern China.

Text symbol

What 𗐷 means

It names the southern direction in Tangut.

Alone, it gives the word, not the sender’s intent; context tells you whether they mean south or are showing the character.

Tangut was modeled on Chinese character structure, but it is a separate script.

Why was Tangut writing created?

The Western Xia ruler commissioned it to write the Tangut language.

The order dates to around 1036 CE. The earliest surviving document is an official letter to a military office dated 1072. Tangut writing continued after the Western Xia state fell; the latest dated example is a Buddhist stele from 1502.

Why does 𗐷 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
