What 𗑜 means

Its Tangut reading comes from the surrounding word or passage.

The name “Tangut Ideograph-1745C” identifies its Unicode slot, not what the character says. Tangut characters have code-point-derived names, so this label does not give the character's translation.

The exact glyph appears as entry 11.153 in the mid-12th-century Sea of Writing, a rhyme dictionary that arranged Tangut characters by rhyme.

How did Tangut writing change over time?

It outlived Western Xia and later became obsolete.

The Tangut language of Western Xia was written in a script the emperor ordered an official to create around 1036. It served state communication and official, private, and religious writing, including translated classics and Buddhist scriptures.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut books continued under Mongol rule. A 14th-century monument at Juyong Pass carries Tangut beside five other scripts. Tangut writing became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Why does Tangut look Chinese?

Tangut's Chinese-influenced shapes belong to a separate script.

The script was designed in a Chinese-influenced visual tradition, but it writes a different language and cannot be read as Chinese.

Tangut characters are not pictures of what they mean. Many combine parts whose sound or meaning helps scholars analyze them.

Historical, language-focused, and specialist rather than conversational.

The code-point label identifies the character; it does not translate it.

Why does 𗑜 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗑜 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
