What was Tangut writing used for?
Tangut writing served Western Xia government and cultural life.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 for the Western Xia state. Its forms were inspired by Chinese writing but were not derived from Chinese characters. Uses included official, private, and religious texts, including Buddhist scriptures translated from Chinese and Tibetan.
Use continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Tangut writing had become obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty, and scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century.
