What 𗔹 means
The number identifies a catalogue entry, not a Tangut word.
A surrounding sentence shows the sign’s role in the writing.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served state-building and a distinct written identity.
Li Yuanhao ordered it to distinguish Tangut identity from Song China. Its forms drew on Chinese writing without deriving from it and followed neighboring Khitan script traditions.
At Khara-Khoto in Inner Mongolia, a manuscript probably from the 12th or early 13th century preserves a Tangut translation of a lost Chinese text about Tang emperor Taizong and his ministers. Tangut works also included Buddhist scriptures, Confucian classics, military and literary texts, encyclopedias, and translations from Tibetan.
