What 𗕙 means
It is a Tangut word character with competing English glosses.
A Unicode working paper glosses LFW2008-1483 as “conceited”; the English index to Li Fanwen’s dictionary files the same entry under “kind.” These are differing English glosses, not evidence that the Tangut word changed meaning over time.
A specialist Tangut dictionary can add a reconstructed reading and lexical explanation. A basic Unicode lookup identifies the character but does not translate its word.
What was Tangut writing used for?
Tangut writing served Western Xia’s government, schools and Buddhist practice.
Traditional accounts date its creation under Western Xia authority to 1036. The script appeared in official records and diplomatic correspondence and was taught in schools.
Tangut was also used for Buddhist texts translated from Chinese and Tibetan. As of 2025, the latest dated Tangut writing identified was a pair of Buddhist dhāraṇī pillars—stone monuments bearing a sacred Buddhist formula—erected at Baoding in 1502, after Western Xia fell.
Why does 𗕙 look different in different apps?
The active font determines how its strokes appear.
Different apps may choose different Tangut fonts or use a fallback. Without Tangut coverage, the font draws a missing-glyph box; that box marks a display failure, not a different character.
Historical and specialist Tangut text; alone, it gives a reader no sentence context for choosing between its glosses.
Don’t read “conceited” or “kind” as a modern personality verdict; they are dictionary glosses for a Tangut word.

Questions people ask
2Why does 𗕙 show as a box?
A box means the active font lacks Tangut coverage. Use a Tangut-capable font; the box is a display failure, not another character.
Is 𗕙 Chinese?
No. This is Tangut writing for the Tangut language. The script drew on Chinese writing for structural ideas, but it is distinct, and 𗕙 does not stand for a Chinese character.
