Tangut Fox Character

1446/6136

𗖥 can mean “fox” or Tangut “who”; context decides. Western Xia created Tangut writing in 1036 for Buddhist texts and state-building. Chinese writing shaped its design, but Tangut remained a separate script.

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary gives “fox” as one sense; a 2020 study also records it as a common Tangut word for “who.”

Neighboring Khitan states created two scripts about a century earlier. Tangut later carried Chinese classics, encyclopedias, military manuals, and literature. The language was spoken until the 16th century, and scholars rediscovered the script in the late 19th century.

Why does 𗖥 show as a box on some devices?
