What 𗗂 means
It means “orphan” in Tangut. Tangut was the language of the medieval Western Xia kingdom in northwestern China.
Is 𗗂 Chinese?
No; it belongs to Tangut writing.
Western Xia formally promulgated the Tangut script in 1036 under Li Yuanhao as part of state-building and an effort to distinguish itself from Song China. Chinese writing inspired its square forms and character-building principles, but Tangut was a distinct script. Its neighbors, the Khitan people, had made scripts earlier, another regional model for state writing. Tangut books included Buddhist texts and Chinese works translated into Tangut.
After Western Xia fell, Tangut descendants in Baoding used the script in Buddhist practice, erecting pillars in memory of two monks.
