Tangut character 𗗈

1481/6136

𗗈 is a character in Tangut writing; its word-level meaning comes from Tangut text, not its Unicode label. The script served the Western Xia state and later continued mainly in Buddhist settings. Its design drew on Chinese and Khitan writing, but it is a separate script for Tangut.

What 𗗈 means

Unicode generates this character’s name from its code point; the label identifies 𗗈 but gives neither a Tangut reading nor an English gloss.

The Tangut script was devised and officially promulgated in 1036 for the Western Xia state. It served administration and Buddhist translation, and was also used for legal records, Chinese classics, military works, and literature.

Its design drew on Chinese writing and on the script used by the Khitan people, but it was made for the separate Tangut language. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued mainly in Buddhist settings; the latest datable examples known are Buddhist inscriptions carved on stone pillars in 1502.

Archival and specialist: it belongs in reproduced Tangut texts and discussions of the script.

Is 𗗈 Chinese? No. It is Tangut; Chinese influence on the script’s design does not make this Chinese text.
