Tangut Character 𗗒

1491/6136

𗗒 means “ground” or “earth” in Tangut, the language of Western Xia. Tangut writing took shape in 1036 to give the new state a script for its language. After Western Xia fell, it still served Buddhist communities: inscriptions on stone pillars at Baoding date to 1502.

What 𗗒 means

It means soil or land. If someone sends it alone, the literal word does not tell you why they chose it; read the surrounding message for their intent.

Is 𗗒 a Chinese character?

No; it belongs to the Tangut script. Tangut writing records Tangut, a language distinct from Chinese. Chinese character forms influenced its design, and its makers followed examples from scripts used by neighboring Khitan states. Those are historical design links; they do not make 𗗒 a Chinese character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗗒 show as a box?

The font used to draw it lacks Tangut glyphs, so it substitutes a blank box. A font with Tangut coverage can display 𗗒; the box is not part of the character.
