What 𗗚 means
It means “sea” in Tangut. The word appears in “the four seas” and in 𘝞𗗚, the title of a Tangut dictionary, “Sea of Writing.”
Why did Tangut create a script?
It gave the Western Xia state a script of its own. Created around 1036, Tangut writing carried government records and translations of Chinese classics and Buddhist texts; the earliest surviving official document dates to 1072.
Some historians connect its design with Chinese and possibly Khitan traditions, though Tangut was a separate script. Tangut writing continued after the fall of Western Xia; the latest known inscription dates to 1502.
