Tangut character 𗙀

𗙀 is a Tangut (Xixia) character glossed “dusk” or “evening.” Its old gloss cannot establish a sender’s intent; display requires a font with Tangut support.

What 𗙀 means

Its recorded gloss is “dusk” or “evening.”

Around 1036, Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the script for state-building: it supported Buddhist scriptures in Tangut and an identity distinct from Song China. Khitan neighbors had created two scripts about a century earlier. Tangut was inspired by Chinese characters’ appearance and design principles, but remained a separate script.

Tangut appears in official, private, religious, translated, and literary texts. After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, writing continued in the Yuan and Ming periods but became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. As of 2026, scholars study Tangut and type designers adapt its historical forms for digital fonts.

1

Why does 𗙀 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
