What 𗛭 means
Read the dictionary gloss as a general tree term.
Unicode’s source record links this glyph to a Tangut–Chinese dictionary entry glossed as “a kind of tree.” Its generated label, “TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-176ED,” identifies the encoded character; the dictionary supplies the Tangut meaning.
The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 for the Western Xia, a Tangut-led state, to write its language and mark a distinct court culture. Its square forms drew on Chinese writing’s style, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language. It served government and Buddhist translation, continued in use through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Scholars deciphered surviving texts with help from dictionaries and bilingual works.
