tangut ideograph-1770f

Tangut character 𗜏

1808/6136

𗜏 is a Tangut character; its reconstructed readings are scholarly sound notations, not translations: Li Fanwen’s 2008 reconstruction gives mə̱¹, and Sofronov’s 1968 gives mə¹. The Tangut (Xixia) script began in 1036 for Western Xia state-building and Buddhist texts, then served Chinese-derived and secular works. Some scholars propose Khitan influence on its design; others see no close script relationship.
