The Tangut script was created around 1036 in Western Xia, a state in what is now northwestern China, to write the Tangut language. It served official records and law, Buddhist translations, and printing. After the Mongols conquered Western Xia, it remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete.
