What 𗣨 means
The references disagree: one says surname; one says sea. Li Fanwen’s 2008 dictionary glosses it “a surname”; a 2026 Tangut–Chinese list pairs 𗣨 with 海, the Chinese character for “sea.”
Created around 1036 for the Tangut-led Western Xia state and Buddhist texts, the script drew on Chinese and Khitan traditions. A Khara-Khoto manuscript dates to the 12th or early 13th century. It remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties until the end of Ming rule.

1Why does 𗣨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
