Tangut character for sky

2324/6136

Text symbol

What 𗤓 means

It names the sky in Tangut. Chinese 天 is a translation match, not a variant or component of this glyph.

The Tangut script was commissioned by Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao in 1036 for state-building and cultural aims. It is thought to have supported a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon. Chinese writing inspired its forms and composition, but the script did not derive from Chinese. Khitan neighbors had created two scripts about a century earlier, setting a precedent. Tangut books include works translated from Chinese and Tibetan, as well as secular writings.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗤓 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
