What 𗦿 means
In one Tangut place-name list, it transcribes 邊, “border.”
Scholars reconstruct its Tangut reading in the notation *pjɨj. The evidence comes from a Western Xia geography fragment, so it attests to a character in a specific name rather than a general word for borders.
The Unicode name is generated from the character’s position in the Tangut block. It identifies the character but does not translate it.
How did Tangut writing develop?
It was created as a state script for Western Xia.
The script was created under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036. It served Buddhist scripture, government and literature, including translations of Chinese and Tibetan texts.
Tangut forms drew on Chinese writing, and the script followed earlier script-building by nearby Khitan. Tangut remained a distinct script for the Tangut language. It continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties and was obsolete by the end of the Ming. This dates the script, not this character’s first appearance.
Historical and scholarly; the documented meaning here depends on a specific place-name context.
Its Chinese-inspired design does not make it a Chinese character.
