What 𗧉 means
Its meaning depends on the word around it.
𗧉 is the second character in 𘝦𗧉, a Tangut Buddhist term translating the Sanskrit word carita. The term is glossed as “conduct,” “character,” or “manner of acting”; those senses belong to the phrase as a whole, not necessarily to the glyph on its own.
Why did Tangut writing exist?
It gave Western Xia a script for its language and institutions.
Imperial authorities commissioned Tangut writing for Western Xia’s language and official life; it was designated for government use in 1036. Its structure drew on Chinese character writing, but Tangut remained a separate script.
Surviving Tangut works include Buddhist translations, dictionaries, manuscripts, and printed books. Textual use continued after Western Xia, then faded from daily writing.
Is 𗧉 Chinese?
No; it is Tangut, a separate script shaped by Chinese writing.
Tangut writing shares structural ideas with Chinese character writing, but the two scripts are distinct. Similarity in form alone does not make a Tangut character readable as Chinese.
The Tangut dictionary The Sea of Characters analyzes 𗧉 using 𗹑 and 𗅲 as components. They are part of that structural analysis, not translations or synonyms.
Historical writing; its attested term is Buddhist, so a lone message needs context.
