𗧼 is a Tangut character whose clearest documented meaning comes from a historical legal term. In Western Xia law, 𗥦𗧼 names a head supervisor or owner with authority over dependent people; scholars reconstruct 𗧼’s reading as dzju. Tangut references also record a variant form, so its outline can differ across sources.

What 𗧼 means

Its reconstructed Tangut reading is dzju; its clearest gloss is part of a legal term.

𗧼 belongs to Tangut, the extinct language written in the medieval Western Xia state. It appears in 𗥦𗧼 in the Laws of Heavenly Prosperity, a Western Xia law code, translated as “head supervisors” or owners. The term describes authority over servants, serfs, and people the source calls semi-slaves. The first character, 𗥦, is associated with “head” or “top,” so the pair names a role; the evidence supports the legal gloss for the pair, not a free-standing everyday “boss” meaning for 𗧼.

Why was the Tangut script created?

Western Xia created it for government and a distinct written culture.

Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as Western Xia built its state. It supported official writing, a Tangut Buddhist canon, and a written tradition distinct from China under the Song dynasty. Later Tangut texts also carried Confucian works, military treatises, and literature translated from Chinese, alongside Buddhist scripture. The script served law, religion, and secular learning.

Why does 𗧼 show as a box?

A box usually means your font lacks Tangut coverage.

Unicode’s glyph review tracks 𗧼 in four Tangut reference works: Sea of Writing, Homophones, Pearl in the Palm, and Synonyms. These are dictionaries and word-reference books. The review notes a standard form and a variant, and identifies the encoded glyph with an attested historical form. Fonts can draw the outline differently; a box usually means Tangut support is missing from the font or software.

Historical and specialist; its clearest attested compound is Western Xia legal language about authority over dependent people.

Its documented compound has a coercive legal context; don’t treat it as a generic “boss” emblem.

Why does 𗧼 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
