Tangut character 𗪒

𗪒 means “inner” or “inside” in Tangut. Its reconstructed reading is conventionally written kuq₁ in scholarly Latin transcription. The character is a word in a historical language, so alone it is best read as Tangut text or a character specimen, not a complete message.

The Tangut script was disseminated around 1036 for official writing under the Western Xia state. Tangut texts include Buddhist translations, government records, laws, and printed works. Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing continued afterward in religious and documentary material.

Tangut writing borrowed visual and compositional principles from Chinese characters, but it records the separate Tangut language. Someone familiar with Chinese may recognize a similar design logic, but that familiarity alone does not let them read this character as Chinese.

What does 𗪒 say on a Western Xia waist pass?

It begins an instruction to stay indoors and await orders. On Western Xia bronze waist passes, 𗪒 opens the phrase 𗪒𗽷𘒩𗭻, translated “Stay indoors and await orders.” The pass identified its holder and carried an operational command; this phrase assigns an interior duty.
