Tangut Character 17A95

2710/6136

𗪕 is a character in the Tangut script; its reading comes from Tangut context, not from its Chinese-like shape. Created for a different language under the Western Xia state, the script was used for Buddhist works, translations and secular writing.

What 𗪕 means

It is a Tangut character; its reading comes from Tangut context.

The codepoint-based Unicode label identifies the character but does not translate it. A Tangut dictionary or surrounding Tangut text is needed to establish its reading; its shape alone does not reveal its meaning.

The script entered official use in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, emperor of the Tangut state known as Western Xia, as part of state-building. Translation of the Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—gave it an early institutional role. An official military document from 1072 is identified in scholarship as the earliest transmitted Tangut document. Surviving works also include Buddhist texts, translations from Chinese and secular writing.

What does 𗪕 mean when someone sends it?

The character alone cannot tell you the sender’s meaning.

If someone sends only 𗪕, ask for its reading or the surrounding text before guessing a joke or attitude. Its shape does not reveal what the sender intended.

Is 𗪕 Chinese?

No. Tangut is a separate script for a different language.

Chinese writing influenced Tangut’s appearance and some of its character-building principles, but Tangut was not derived from Chinese. Someone familiar with Chinese writing may recognize that influence without being able to read this character as Chinese.

The neighboring Khitan people had also developed state-backed scripts earlier. That is a historical parallel between states, not a documented link between this character and a Khitan glyph.

It belongs to historical Tangut writing; a message’s tone depends on its surrounding conversation.

A Chinese-like design does not make this Chinese writing.
