What 𗪺 means
In a contract, it begins a phrase about offering labour.
A Tangut contract dated 1220 gives the sequence 𗪺𗷖𗣈 the sense “offering labour” or “renting out labour.” The English gloss belongs to all three characters; it does not settle a standalone translation for 𗪺.
The pair 𗪺𗷖 also appears in the “Offering Labour” chapter of the Laws of Heavenly Prosperity, a Tangut law code. Both examples place the writing in legal and economic settings.
When did Tangut writing begin?
It was developed for the Western Xia state in the 11th century.
Historical accounts connect its creation and official promotion to Emperor Li Yuanhao and the official Yeli Renrong; another account credits Yuqi with an early draft. The script served Western Xia public life and helped mark Tangut identity alongside Chinese.
The earliest transmitted example identified in modern scholarship is an official Guazhou document dated 1072; a pagoda inscription at Liangzhou followed in 1094. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, including a Baoding inscription from 1502.
A Tangut preface from 1190 describes Tangut and Chinese scripts as different in form but sharing roots. Possible Khitan influence on Tangut writing is also discussed.
In ordinary chat, it reads as a quoted historical Tangut character; its documented examples come from legal and economic writing.
The contract gloss applies to the full phrase, not to 𗪺 by itself.
