What 𗫙 means

It is a Tangut word glossed “to stand up.”

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese Dictionary assigns that meaning to this entry. Is 𗫙 a Chinese character? No: it belongs to Tangut script, created for the Tangut language of the Western Xia state.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave the Western Xia state a distinct written identity.

The script was promulgated in 1036. Accounts credit Emperor Li Yuanhao; others credit his father Deming. Yeli Renrong helped standardize it. Its main model was Chinese character writing, with possible influence from Khitan script, a neighboring writing system.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut survived in Buddhist writing. A Buddhist inscription at Baoding dates to 1502.
