tangut ideograph-17b19

Tangut Character 17B19

2842/6136

𗬙 belongs to the Tangut script; the Unicode name labels the entry, not its meaning. Created under Western Xia around 1036, Tangut writing appears in official, private, and religious texts. It remained in use after the state fell, then became obsolete. Tangut characters resemble Chinese writing, but the script is distinct; a Tangut font is needed to display 𗬙.

Text symbol

What 𗬙 means

It is Tangut; its Unicode label does not translate it. “Tangut Ideograph-17B19” comes from Unicode’s assigned number, not the character’s reading or word. Western Xia, a state in northwest China, created the script to write the Tangut language. It remained in use after the state fell and became obsolete by the Ming dynasty’s end. Rediscovered in the late 19th century, it was largely deciphered.

1

Why does 𗬙 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
