Tangut character 𗯍

3022/6136

𗯍 is a Tangut character glossed as “beast.” Tangut writing served the Western Xia state and carried Buddhist texts, translations, official records, and literature. Sent alone, it is best read as a script specimen or an invitation to identify the word; its exact shape depends on the font.

What 𗯍 means

It means “beast” in the Tangut lexicon. Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary glosses this entry as “beast.” The Unicode label is algorithmic, so it identifies the character rather than translating it.

Tangut writing was created around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, to support a Tangut Buddhist canon and give the state a distinct written identity alongside Song China. It took cues from neighboring Khitan state scripts and Chinese-style character building, yet Tangut is a separate script, not Chinese.

Tangut also carried translated Chinese works, Confucian and military writings, literature, state records, and religious texts. The 1094 Liangzhou stele—a stone monument with an inscription—is early surviving evidence; a manuscript from Khara-Khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. After Western Xia fell to the Mongols in 1227, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties into the 16th century.

What does 𗯍 mean when sent alone?

Read it as a Tangut-script specimen or identification prompt. A lone character gives little conversational context; the sender may be pointing to the script or asking about this word.

In a Tangut sentence, 𗯍 contributes the word glossed “beast”; surrounding words show how it fits.

Why does 𗯍 look different?

The font changes the drawing, not the character’s identity. Tangut sources preserve different glyph shapes, and Unicode unifies variants that do not distinguish words. Fonts can therefore change proportions or details without changing which character is encoded.

A missing-glyph box means the font lacks Tangut coverage; it does not signal a different meaning.

Historical and archival; explain that it is a Tangut word if the recipient may not recognize the script.

The Unicode label identifies the character; it does not translate the Tangut word.
