tangut ideograph-17c28

Tangut character 𗰨

𗰨 is a Tangut character, not a Chinese character. Tangut script was created for the Tangut language of the Western Xia state in northwestern China, modeled on Chinese writing. It entered official use for state correspondence in 1036; in 1038, a committee was formed to translate Buddhist sutras into Tangut, and texts from after Western Xia fell in 1227 are mostly Buddhist. Unicode’s label identifies the glyph, not its Tangut meaning.
